If I wanted to reinstall wordpress, do I have to delete all files in my public html folder?
Sometimes we only need a quick confirmation to put us in the right direction.
One of my readers asked this question:
“If someone wanted to reinstall wordpress, do they have to delete all files in the public_html folder? I screwed up my wordpress installation and i want to start from scratch. How do i reintall wordpress. Do we need to delete everything under public_html?”
The question is quite common, so a short answer would be appropriate. Here is a short video explaining the answer, and also showing my screen what buttons to press, and what to do.

As you can see, in order tro be on the safe side and make sure you have a clean installation, this is what you need to do step by step:
- Take a good backup so you can import your content later
- Remove all the wordpress files in your public_html folder
- Delete the existing wordpress database
- Install wordpress as new. This will in most cases create the new database for you automatically.
- Copy over the content from your backups

When removing files, permissions can get tricky, especially if something weird have happened. Make sure you check all the permissions if you run into any problems. Remember, google is your friend.
